CO2 and green hydrogen are combined in a reactor to obtain raw eMethanol, which also contains 36% water. This process is called “methanol synthesis”. The methanol skid produces 2,500 liters per day of raw eMethanol at its maximum capacity, which is then stored in the tank farm.
Methanol can be used directly as a shipping fuel, or as a building block to produce longer chains of hydrocarbons, such as those required for plastics, gasoline, or jet fuels.
Different parameters are monitored to transform eMethanol into eGasoline.
The Siemens Gamesa wind turbine has a capacity of 3.4MW and a total height of 150 meters. The blades are 65 meters long and the tower is 85 meters high.
Strong and constant winds make Magallanes one of the best locations in the world for production of hydrogen and derivatives.
The electrolyzer uses the renewable energy produced by the wind turbine to split water (H2O) molecules into oxygen (O2) and hydrogen (H2). This process is called “electrolysis”.
Our 1.2 MW PEM electrolyzer is composed of a 250-cell stack. It produces 20.5 kg of green hydrogen per hour at its maximum capacity, which is then stored in a 50 m³ buffer tank.
The green tank stores unprocessed water. Only 280 litres per hour of water is consumed in the electrolysis process. Over 80% of the capacity of the tank is required for fire fighting purposes, in case of an emergency.
The raw methanol is distilled to lower the water content from 36% to 4%. Refined methanol enters the fluidized bed reactor, where dehydration reactions glue the carbon atoms from the methanol together to form longer hydrocarbon chains, known as raw gasoline. This gasoline goes through a stabilization and fractioning process to obtain our final product: a 93 octane gasoline, chemically equivalent to conventional gasoline. This drop in eFuel can be used in any gasoline powered vehicle, with no modifications required.
Electrical energy is managed to optimize the green hydrogen production and the efficient use of CO2 in the production of eMethanol.
